Recycling In Benalmadena

Although scoring a few points below the European Union standards, Spain does put effort into recycling. There is an organisation in charge of managing the collection and recycling of items. In Benalmadea, there are recycle bins and containers on the streets or corners within a short walking distance.

The bins are colour coded so that people will know what waste goes into which bin.

Yellow is for plastic, and tin containers.
Blue is for paper.
Green is for glasses.
Orange is for domestic waste.
In some areas, there are red containers for hazardous wastes such as batteries, insecticides, aerosol cans etc...

These bins might look small, but they are just the top where you lift the cover to dump your rubbish. The containers are underground. There is a mechanical switch which lifts up the whole platform, so that the workers can empty the rubbish into the trucks. I happened to see the garbage truck and the helpers at work one day.
There are also bigger bins.
These big grey bins are for bulk materials, and household fittings.
In the apartment, we have our own separation of wastes for easy disposal as well. We separate paper, plastic, tins, glass and waste into different bags for easy disposal. Every bit helps, and we are happy to play our part.
At the supermarket, to encourage people to bring their own bags, they charge twelve to fifteen euro cents for a plastic bag. People usually bring their own bags to the supermarket or stores.
