Semenggoh’s main attraction for visitors is its Wildlife Centre, where endangered species, once kept illegally as pets, are trained on how to fend for themselves before being released into the forest. Over the years, a number of Orangutans have been trained and released and now form a semi-wild colony in the reserve. - Wikipedia
The Semenggoh Wildlife Centre is the biggest Orangutan rehabilitation center in Sarawak. The center serves as a habitat for the Orangutans and also a place for visitors to learn about the endangered rare species. They spend most of their time roaming the forest but are trained to go back to the centre during feeding times where they will be able to get a free meal from the caretakers.
However, during fruiting seasons - when there are plenty of fruits in the forest, they might not come down for the handouts at all.
We arrived at the wildlife Centre just as the caretakers in the center were preparing to feed the Orangutans. And we were lucky to see the Orangutans showed up for the food. Just as we were itching for a closer look, it started raining. What a damper!
Since we already had a glimpse of the Orangutans, we decided to call it a day.
Besides orangutans, Semenggoh Nature Reserve is also a habitat for rare flora and fauna including the giant squirrel, pygmy squirrel, gibbons and a splendid variety of birds.
Here are some photos from the visit. Unfortunately, they are not the best. A phone camera does have its limits, especially when it comes to long shots.
