My Trip To Kuching

We flew with Scoot Airlines

"Kuching, officially the City of Kuching, is the capital and the most populous city in the state of Sarawak in Malaysia. It is also the capital of Kuching Division. The city is on the Sarawak River at the southwest tip of the state of Sarawak on the island of Borneo and covers an area of 431 km2 (166 sq mi) with a population about 165,642 in the Kuching North administrative region and 159,490 in the Kuching South administrative region - a total of 325,132 people." - Wikipedia

A summary of my trip

The evening flight leaving here was delayed for one and a half hours. I heard there was a technical fault, but wasn't sure whether the fault was with the plane or some ground mechanics. After arriving at the hotel, we went out in search of food. The driver who fetched us from the airport said most eateries would be closed. However, we found a 24 hr McDonald's outlet near the hotel. We were all pleased.

The next day, we went to the Sarawak cultural village. That was quite interesting.

Our first place of interest was the Sarawak Cultural Village

After the cultural village, we went for lunch at a seafood restaurant by the beach.
The program after lunch was to see the Orang Utans in the Semenggoh Nature Reserve. We had just seen the Orang Utans making their appearances when it started to rain. That was no fun. We had to beat a hasty retreat.
From then on, it drizzled on and off. Not heavy enough to put you off any activity, but enough to take the fun out of whatever we were doing.

To get out of the rain, we went to the kek lapis (a layered cake) shop, where you can see them make the kek lapis on site. We tasted some samples. They were all very nice and a few of us bought some to take home.

After the visit to the kek lapis shop, we went to have a look at another of their tourist attractions - the Kuching Waterfront, which is like our Marina Bay. It was nice, but the continuing rain spoilt the pleasure of the visit. We would have loitered a bit longer if it hadn't been for the rain. But it's not much fun carrying an umbrella in one hand and trying to snap a picture with the other. Neither was it fun walking in the rain in sogging wet shoes.
So, after a quick tour of the Waterfront, we went for dinner - at a popular local restaurant (Lepau restaurant) recommended by our local contact.
After dinner, some in the group went for massages and some of us went back to the hotel to rest. It was still drizzling on and off, and quite heavy at times.

The second day was shopping and eating. One of the guys in the group has a contact in Sarawak. She roped in her friend to show us around. They were most helpful - suggesting places to go, food we must try, etc... It was a day of touring the city, shopping and eating. During a brief break in the afternoon, a few in the group went for massages while the rest of us went back to the hotel to change, shower and to get ready for dinner. Dinner was another scrumptious meal. After dinner, we spilt up. Some of us go to a karaoke bar while some went back to the hotel.

A visit to Chinatown and the handicraft shops in the vincinity.

The third day was free and easy. After breakfast, we all go our own ways. Some went to the museum, some went for a swim, some went out for a walk in the vicinity of the hotel. We checked out at half past twelve. Leaving our luggages at the hotel, we went in search of lunch. We had a quick lunch, and after that, we decided to go back to the hotel lobby to kill the time before our transport fetches us for the airport. We would like to have another walk around the area, but the sky was showing signs of approaching rain. True enough, some of us had barely made it back to the hotel when it started raining.

All in all, I think we all had an enjoyable trip. It would have been better without the rain. But then, the rain could have been worse. So, we should be thankful and not complain too much.

And, that is my brief summary of my trip to Kuching with eight other mates. I will be posting more pictures and details of the trip in the coming days.
