All Puns Intended

A pun is a joke or type of wordplay in which similar senses or sounds of two words or phrases, or different senses of the same word, are deliberately confused. Puns are better understood if you have a reasonable command of the language they are in.

I hope you get a laugh out of the following puns. I know, some of them are rather lame. But still, some people might get laugh out of it.

The following images are from Facebook page 'Trek Talking' and other Facebook pages.

Year-end Get-together

The end is near – I meant end of year 2023. Less than two days and we will be in a New Year! Are you getting ready for the countdown party?

For yours truly, it will be just another day. Nothing to get excited about.

However, I did get together with some friends (the usual suspects) on Wednesday and enjoyed a very nice home-cooked meal by our dear friend Ernest. The dear man prepared a feast for us.

The ‘party’ started at 3pm with snacks and tea. Since it was a workday, not all could come at that time. However, everyone was there by 6pm. There were eight of us – including the host.

These were the result of the host’s labour.

A light snack to keep us going until meal time.

This is dinnner proper. Some Swiss bread
A home-made salad of lettuce, cucumber and tomatoes and, of course, home-made dressing.
Mixed cheese platter with almonds, blueberries and wafer crackers
Cold cuts platter of duck terrine, prosciutto and smoked duck
Pan-fried mixed seafood – prawns, scallops and squids
Beef Bourguignon
Duck Confit
Some spaghetti noodles
Fruits and dessert after the meal...
And a very nice apple crumble.
Needless to say, there were spirits – beers and wines. Besides the fruits and the apple crumble, and the spirits, the rest of the food was prepared by, and a treat from Ernest.

Needless to say too, we all had a jolly good time. As with all our gatherings, there were always plenty of – besides food, lots of laughter. Ah! the little pleasures of life – good company, a good laugh, lots to eat – and drink. What more could one ask for?

Ficus Pumila

Ficus pumila, commonly known as the creeping fig or climbing fig, is a species of flowering plant in the mulberry family.

As the name implies, the plant is a creeper and is often used in gardens and landscapes where it covers the ground and climbs up walls. They are fast growing and they make nice wall covers. However, because they grow fast, they are also considered invasive.

Ficus pumila are perennial and the fruits are shaped like pears.

Change

People resist change largely because of the fear of the unknown. If we are assured that our change is for the better, I think we would gladly do what is necessary to change.

However, we must understand that change is a constant in life. Nothing remains the same forever. At some point, for better, or for worse, we have to change. Maybe we have to change for the worse first, before changing again for the better. We just do not know. What we could do is to go with the flow. When it comes time to change, we must change no matter how reluctant we are.

Any change is better than none and most change is for the better. It has the power to uplift, to heal, to stimulate, surprise, open new doors, bring fresh experience and create excitement in life. It elevates us from mediocrity and saves us from false security. Certainly it is worth the risk! We must also keep in mind that it is only through change that we can continue to experiment with ourselves and our lives. - Leo Buscaglia

When we find that life is a bore, that existence is a chore, that the wonder and magic of being alive is vanishing, it is possible that it is because we are resisting change. If we have become trapped in a dull, lifeless rhythm, we must resolve to give up our resistance and dance to a new step. When we do, we will surely rediscover that change is our greatest source of happiness, stimulation and continued growth. - Leo Buscaglia

When I was a young man, I wanted to change the world. I found it was difficult to change the world, so I tried to change my nation. When I found I couldn’t change the nation, I began to focus on my town. I couldn’t change the town and as an older man, I tried to change my family. Now, as an old man, I realize the only thing I can change is myself, and suddenly I realized that if long ago I had changed myself, I could have made an impact on my family. My family and I could have made an impact on our town. Their impact could have changed the nation and I could indeed have changed the world. - Unknown

Walking

Walking is integral to our health.

“When we walk, we coordinate movement of our arms, legs, and torso. Hundreds of calorie-burning muscles come into play – not only the muscles you'd expect, such as legs and arm muscles, but also internal muscles such as the psoas.” - Frank Lipman & Mollie Doyle

Of Wit And Humour

In these uncertain and troubled times, nothing is more appreciated than some laughter. Laughter might not solve our problems, but it provides a few minutes of relaxation, and distraction from all the negative news that is going around.

It is also said that a sense of humour can give our immunity system a boost. So, laugh whenever you can. It is cheap medicine.

May your days be filled with laughter.

The Festival of Yule

Have you ever wondered how Christmas celebrations came about. I learned one version of it, when I visited the Poinsetta flower display at the Flower Dome at the Gardens by the Bay recently.

"Prior to the arrival of Christianity in the Nordic region, the Vikings and various Germanic peoples celebrated the winter solstice each December when the days were the shortest and the nights the longest. This celebration, known as the Yule festival, is one of the precursors to the morden Christmas holiday, and many of its customs and traditions have been adopted."

For example:
"1. Evergreen plants, such as holly, ivy and mistletoe were used to decorate homes during Yule. They symbolised the promise of spring and the continuation of life.
2. Yule was a time for exchanging gifts which were meant to bring good luck or protection in the coming year.
3. Feasting and merrymaking were common during Yule. Friends and relatives would gather to enjoy food and drink.
4. The Yule log is a central symbol of the festival. It was carefully selected, ceremonially brought into the house, and burnt on a hearth to represent the returning sun and the continuity of life."

So, now you know how Christmas came about. Is this the version you know too?

Christmas Lights

Orchard Road – that’s where people head for, to see the year-end festive lights. The yearly light-up ties in with the festive holiday season to draw visitors to the famed shopping belt. This year there will be a street party too on Christmas Eve.

Along with the light-up, there are mini fairs, music bands and performances, Christmas carols, ice-cream sellers and food trucks.

With colouful LED lights of cotton candy floating in the air, Orchard road sports a dreamy look and feel. That is this year’s theme – “to capture a child’s imagination as one wanders through a cotton candy cloud dreamscape replete with Christmas trees and bells, as well as teddy bears, reindeer, and candy canes.” - Source

I went down down to have a look last week. Here are some photos of the lights and decorations from my visit.
