Ruellia Simplex

A beautiful purple flower. They are quite common around my area and along my walk route. It is only today, that I found out they are called Ruellia Simplex.

Ruellia Simplex C. Wright is the oldest and accepted name for this species. But they are also known as the Mexican petunia, Mexican bluebell or Britton's wild petunia, it is a species of flowering plant in the family Acanthaceae - a native of Mexico, the Caribbean, and South America.

Ruellia simplex is an evergreen perennial, forming colonies of stalks with lance-shaped leaves. Trumpet shaped flowers are metallic blue to purple. They are widely used as an ornamental plant.

The flowers bloom are in full bloom in the early morning, and they start dropping off after that. By afternoon, not many are left on the plant. However, if the weather is cool, one will see a few more flowers than usual in the afternoon.

Did you know… that when you walk past a flower, whether it be in somebody’s garden or on a vacant hillside, the flower will always smile at you. The most polite way to respond, I’ve been told, is to cheerfully return the smile. - Ron Atchison
