Shadow of Trees

Face the sun if you fear the shadows. To live free, learn to live with the shadows. If you dislike the shadows, you will always have to face the sun. - Vineet Raj Kapoor

The shadows of trees depend on how thick their foliage is. They can be a simple patch of shadow, or they can be an intricate network. One or the other, they are all very interesting. But for shade, one would definitely opt for the tree with a thicker foliage.

Chinese New Year Decors

The Lunar New Year falls on the 1st of February this year. We will be welcoming the Year of the Tiger!

Like all Chinatown over the world, Singapore’s Chinatown is busiest at this time of the year. People flock to Chinatown to shop for dried goods, cookies, and Chinese New Year decors. In the evening, people will check out the night market, have a look at the festive lights and decors, and to soak in the festive atmosphere.

The lights will have a theme base on the year of the Zodiac animals. The coming year will be the Year of the Tiger. Hence, all lights will showcase the tiger.

I went to have a look at the night market in Chinatown, and the lights too. The scene this year was much livelier than last year’s, as we were then at the peak of the pandemic. However, it was still a far cry from the years before the pandemic, when the crowd was packed shoulders to shoulders.

Here are some photos of the decors and lights that adorned the streets in Chinatown.

This was early evening and the lights were just coming on.

There was a display of various tigers at the Chinatown square. I didn’t go up close to see what it was all about.
This was the back of the Buddha Tooth Temple.

These images are not mine. They are taken from Facebook pages.

Beehive Cookies (蜂窝饼)

Bee-hive cookies is another popular favourite of Chinese New Year Cookies. My sister will make some every year too.

I did a post on that last year as well. Have a look 👉 HERE if you are interested.

Baking bee-hive cookies is definitely a two persons job. One to deposit the mix in the wok of oil and one to fish the cookie out when it is ready.

Dipping the mould in the mix, careful not to let the mix cover the top, or the ‘bee-hive’ would cling to the mould and not come off.

Picking, or fishing the cookie out when it is ready.
Leaving them to cool before keeping them in a tub.

PineappleTarts

Pineapple Tarts are popular Chinese New Year cookies. Every year, my sister will make some. It is a lot of work.

I did a post on it last year. Have a look 👉 HERE if you are interested.

However, this year, my sister decided to give the ready made pineapple fillings a try. Making the fillings from scratch is too much work.

These were the ready made pineapple fillings. My job was to mould them into pineapple balls, while my sister prepared the dough.

When the dough was ready, my job was to mould them into dough balls. My sister will then wrap the pineapple fillings in the dough.
These are ready to go into the oven.
Here’s cooling the pineapple tarts before packing them into tubs.

Reflections

The Lunar New Year is just round the corner. It is the biggest festive holiday in Singapore. Everywhere, there are decors welcoming the Year of the Tiger.

At the Gardens by the Bay, there is a lake. There were some décors in the lake, and the first two pictures are windows of a café opposite the lake reflecting the décors in the lake.

These were the decors in the lake.

The rest of the pictures are reflections of decors in a fish pond.
