Crescentia Cujete aka Calabash Gourd

I came upon this tree in the Gardens by the bay. It looks like a pomelo tree from far. A sign on the tree said it is a Crescentia cujete tree. Crescentia cujete is also commonly known as the calabash gourd.

It is called as a miracle fruit by some. Apparently, medicinal uses of Calabash fruit includes curing asthma and cough, dysentery and stomach aches, reduce blood pressure and treat tumors. You can read more about it 👉 HERE

After removing the flesh, or ‘meat’ of the calabash, the shell “is primarily used to make utensils such as cups, bowls, and basins in rural areas. In some Caribbean countries, it is worked, painted, and decorated and turned into items by artisans, and sold to tourists.” - Wilipedia
