De Lemar Cafe

From one hill to another, and there are many hills in Hat Yai. This time, the driver’s instruction was quite clear. Go have a coffee and enjoy the view. We did just that, and some of us ordered snacks as well. It was a nice spot to relax and enjoy the view below.

The Royal Pagoda

I am not quite sure what our driver’s intention was to take us to this pagoda. As I said, we have communication problems. The pagoda houses a small Buddha statue, and as far as we can see, that is it. It’s a pagoda in a ‘park’ on a hill top.

Perhaps, his intention was to show us the view from the top of the hill. That was quite impressive, as you will see from the photos.

Kelongs

Continuing on my trip to Hat Yai...

By the time we finished visiting the temples, it was time for lunch. Our driver cum guide – he was a nice and accommodating fellow. Unfortunately, his English was limited and we had some difficulties in understanding each other. He took us to one of the off the tourist map places for seafood lunch – a village near the sea. The village has a rustic charm to it. It was nice, and something different.

After lunch, we took a walk in the area, and went to have a view of the kelongs. The dwellings looked new and well maintained.

“A kelong is an offshore platform built predominantly with wood, which can be found in waters off Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia.  Only a handful remain around Singapore due to rapid urbanisation. Kelongs are built by fishermen primarily for fishing or fish farming purposes, although larger structures can also function as dwellings for them and their families.” - Wikipedia

This looks like a service area. It would be great to be able to have a meal and a couple of drinks here in the evening with a view of the kelong in the distance.

Laughter The Best Medicine

Sometimes, the only way out of a stressful life is to have a good laugh – at life, at yourself. A hearty laugh will overcome more difficulties and dissipates more dark clouds than any other one thing.

The following images are taken from Facebook pages, and Whatsapp messages.

Hat Yai City Municipal Park II

From the Guanyin (Guan Inn) Temple in the Municipal park, we went higher up the hill to see southern Thailand’s tallest Buddha. At 25 meters tall, and weighing 200 tonnes, “the immense golden statue, weighing 200 tonnes, casts its serene eyes over the entire Songkhla Province from atop Hat Yai Municipality Park’s highest hills. - 👉 Source
The cable car station. For those who do not drive or have transport up the hill, they can take the cable car.
The Buddha keeping an eye over the city below. Breathtaking views from the top of the hill.
After having a look at and around the area of the standing Buddha, we proceeded to the mountain top to see the ‘Four-face’ Buddha. The ‘Four-face Buddha is very popular with Buddhist followers. Many went to pray for one thing or another. If, and when their prayers were granted, they will go back to give thanks and show their gratitude.
Setting off firecreackers is one way of givng thanks and showing gratitude. When we were there, one guy set off four sets of firecrackers. I heard whispers that his prayers for his sickly wife to recover was answered. So he has come back with his wife to give prayers and thanks to the Buddha.
Elephants are revered animals in Thailand. Statues and sculptures of them are all over the temple grounds.
