Benalmadena is a very likeable town. It is 26.87 square kilometres and has a population of about 65,000 people. It is what people would call a dormitory town of Malaga. There are no big industries or businesses here. So, most people go to work in Malaga in the morning and come back at night. Basically, it is a town of holiday makers and retirees. The pace of life is slow and laid-back. No one is in a hurry. Life is simple, and affordable. The locals are friendly and accepting.
Benalmadena is made up of the Pueblos, which are the villages at the base of the mountains, Arroyo, which is the town center and Costa del Sol, the beach. The locals are mainly in the Pueblos. There are locals in the town center, but you see more expats in Arroyo. The tourists stay mainly in the Benalmadena Costa.
The town is self-sufficient. One does not have to go to Malaga, the city center if he or she is happy with a simple life. There are many little shops here and a few big supermarkets. They are all within walking distance. One doesn’t have to go far for the daily necessities.
Benalmadena is at the base of a mountain range. Therefore, it is very hilly. Everywhere you go, there are slopes and steps. People here like dogs. I think one in four households has a dog. With such a big number of dogs, there is the problem of dog shit on the streets. Some dog owners are inconsiderate and do not pick up after their dogs although they are required by law to do so.
And with that, I have come to an end of my report of my holidays in Benalmadena. It was a very pleasant and relaxing six weeks. Hopefully, I will be back again next year. We shall see. Goodbye for now, Benalmadena.
My plane has arrived to take me back to Singapore.
