This is the 'flower bed' where the orchid display is being held.
A lath house is a type of structure that provides support, shade, and protection for plants, particularly shade-loving ones such as orchids. Thin strips of wood or metal are arranged in a parallel pattern, with small gaps between them, allowing diffused light, air and rain to enter while ensuring direct sunlight, excessive wind or other harsh weather conditions are kept out.
Lath houses became popular in the early 19th century with the invention of the circular saw which could cut thin narrow slats by the thousands. Inside the structure, plants may rest on benches, or hang from the ceiling. Climbing or vining plants are also able to grow and spread along the framework.
Rumah Tungkup refers to the traditional houses with pyramid shaped roofs in Kampong Ayer, an area of Brunei's capital city Bandar Seri Begawan that is situated after the Brunei Bay.
An elaborate style of traditional house favoured by Malay nobles and dignitaries, Rumah Tungkup features a hip roof which covers the whole of the indung rumah (main house). It also includes a covered veranda known as tangga pemandian, which was reserved for women’s bathing and the washing of clothes.
Rumah Toraja, also known as Tongkonan, refers to the traditional houses found in the Toraja ethnic group of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. They are iconic symbols of Torajan culture, and are known for their unique architectural style and cultural significance.
Characterised by its distinctive boat-shaped roof resembling an upturned boat or buffalo horns, the roofs are adorned with intricate carvings and designs, a reflection of the rich cultural and spiritual beliefs of the Toraja people.
The construction and maintenance of a Rumah Toraja often involve the joint efforts of the extended family or community, which speaks of the strong communal values and kinship ties of the people.
Rumah Pahang refers to the traditional houses found in the largest state in Peninsular Malaysia - Pahang. The traditional architecture of Rumah Pahang reflects the cultural and environmental influences of the region. It typically consists of a raised structure built on stilts to protect against flooding and promote ventilation. Large windows and wide eaves provide shade and allow breezes to flow through the house. Apart from features to suit the local climate, Rumah Pahang also incorporates carvings, motifs and vibrant colours to reflect the cultural identity and aesthetic preferences of the community.
