Though short on sights and historic charm, the laid-back and quiet city is a haven for those who like to shop, eat, and massages. Besides that there are also many temples and markets. The floating market is of interest to the tourists.
In the 70s and 80s, Hat Yai was famous for its sleazy clubs with adult ‘floor-shows’, girlie bars, and drag shows. In the world of sleaze, it was said that as long as you can afford to pay, they can arrange to have your whims and whatever kinky sexual fantasies fulfilled. In the clubs, girls perform all sorts of shows and tricks too crude and rude to mention here. In the girlie bars, young girls pounced on the men that walked in, keeping them entertained. Some of them left the bar at the end of the evening/night with the men – for a price, of course.
It looks like someone has cleaned Hat Yai of the sleaze. We didn’t come across any of these bars or clubs – not that we were looking for them. Instead, there were massage parlours everywhere. A very competitive trade.
I will talk a bit more of the trade in the coming days. Meanwhile here are some photos of the place.
This is the Hat Yai Central Mall. It is huge. You find some of the higher end brand names and goods here. As with any mall there are many restaurants and eateries. The night and morning markets. Temples, of which there are many.Click on the photo to see the bigger picture.
