Costa Del Sol

Costa del Sol – literally, ‘sun coast’ is a 150 km stretch of beach, in the Malaga Province of Spain. It comprises of a number of towns popular with the British, Germans, Scandinavians and French. The area's sunny climate is the main attraction. This is where sun seekers head for in summer. It reportedly accounted for 35% of Spain’s tourist income.

Benalmadena sits in the center of this very popular coast. On the beach sit sunbeds and straw shade umbrellas for rent. Along the beach promenade are restaurants, cafes and gift shops. Up on the road are hotels, apartments and more restaurants, cafes and gift shops.

Tourists’ arrival on the Costa del Sol begin in May. Peak periods are from July to September, when it is the school holidays and European summer holidays. By the end of September, tourists will begin to dwindle when the Summer holidays end, and children go back to school. By then, it will also be too windy and cold to go into the water.

The beach is fifteen minutes walk from Roger’s apartment. On days when we do not have to go to the shop, we sometimes take a long walk on the beach. Here are some photos from our walk last Sunday.

Cloud-spotting

Clouds, propelled by the wind, float across the sky, looking very much like cotton wools, forming all sorts of shapes and sizes. Somehow this always fascinates me. They can be quite spectacular if the light hits them at the right angle at the right time of day.

On the balcony, I had a clear view of the sky outside. Sometimes, I got lucky and was rewarded with some absolutely beautiful cloud formation or light shows.

I caught the following recently. It is not the most beautiful thing I have seen, but it was still interesting to watch the clouds float across the sky. Cloud-spotting is never dull.

“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water. Or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.” - John Lubbock

An Afternoon Walk In Arroyo

Although on holidays, I didn’t forget to take my daily walks. And here’s where the many advantages of walking come in. It requires no special equipment, and is a safe, low impact workout with a low risk of injuries and accidents. I can walk at any time of the day, at a pace I am comfortable with. I can walk alone or with company.

Roger and I take our walks in the afternoon. If we need to go to the shop, we would take a roundabout route and then drop in at the shop to do our shopping. If we do not need to go to the shop, we will take a longer walk – usually along the beach.

I take my camera along with me when I go on my walks. If I see something interesting, I will snap a picture of it. Here are some snapshots of apartments in the neighbourhood.

Dinner

The advantage of a home-stay holiday is that you do not have to eat out every meal, which can take up a big part of the travel expenses. I am also not a foodie who must try every dish on the menu.

Roger and I take turns to cook when we are not dining out. Roger cooks western dishes, and I cook simple Chinese dishes. I am not a good cook. Luckily, Roger is, like me, not very particular about food. We eat to live.

Nowadays, there are many ready-made pastes on the market. It makes cooking so much easier, especially when you are cooking for one or two persons. Empty the paste into the pot, add in the meat, cook, boil, simmer and viola, the dish is ready. If it is not good, blame it on the paste.

We have dinner on the balcony, while watching the sun set. It won’t be easy to find a restaurant with such a lovely view. Sometimes, Swifts and seagulls circle in the sky picking up insects and creatures invisible to the human eye. All very interesting.

This was what I prepared the other night.

Green curry
A mix of broccoli, cauliflower and carrots stir fried
Fried egg and onion omelette
The speck in the center of the photo is a seagull.
