Choa Chu Kang Park was a small park then. Later on, they added an extension doubly its size and added a few more facilities. It now has facilities for the whole family – young and old. There is also a restaurant. The restaurant is doing quite well. Maybe people like the idea of taking a walk after a meal, of having a meal after a walk, or simply just dining in the park for a change.
Anyway, today, we are concentrating on the community gardens, of which there are two. I think the park was one of the earlier parks picked for the pilot scheme of having community gardens. And it could be that a second one was added due to the popularity of the scheme.
Today, I will show some pictures of the community gardens. I had doubts about people wanting to take up the plots when they first announced that they were setting up the community garden. The plots were in the middle of nowhere. There was no shelter, and water was a distance away. How could anyone grow anything. But I was wrong. With a bit of creativity, improvisation and lots of enthusiasm for gardening, the gardeners managed to make the place work.
Space is a bit limited. So, every where looks a bit cramped. We know how people can be so inconsiderate and thoughtless sometimes. Obviously, enough for the gardeners to complain, and for the National Parks to put up the sign. This is the second community garden. They are more spacious and organized. They come in beds."Each allotment garden plot consists of a raised planter bed (2.5m x 1m) and comes equipped with soil in the planter box, as well as a mini storage area for tools. The lease period for these plots will be typically up to 3 years at a charge of $57 per year (excluding GST), but it may be subject to the Board’s discretion, depending on the lease period available in an existing site. All allotment gardens are situated in our public parks and gardens, and are unfenced to allow the public to visit and appreciate the gardens." - National Parks
