Ageing

Ageing is a process we all have to go through. Nobody remains young forever. You might be a bit more youthful looking and healthy if you had looked after your body, or if you have good genes. Other than that, we all age – at our own time. There is nothing we can do about it. We can either accept the ageing process as a fact of life and deal with it as best we can – gracefully, or we can whine and complain about it and make our life miserable in the process. Whatever you do, it makes no difference except to your quality of life.

Remember, there are people who didn’t make it to the ageing process. Life for them was cut short for one reason or another. Hence, we shouldn’t complain about growing old, because there are people who do not have that privilege. Rather, we should prepare for old age as best we can and accept what comes our way. A change of mindset and acceptance is all that is needed for us to live happily in our old age.

Let us see what other people think about ageing.

Kalanchoe Plants

These Kalanchoe plants were in their prime when I got them. I have read somewhere that these plants are usually good for one bloom only. However, I didn’t discard them after their first bloom, and was rewarded with a second – albeit smaller bloom. After the second bloom, I still keep them to see what happens.

They were still growing new shoots and they seemed to be outgrowing the pot they came in. One day, I took them for a shower. I think I gave them too much water, because one of them proceeded to shed its leaves. The other one survived the shower but it was looking tired.

I do not know much about these plants. But from my recent experience, these plants seem like they are meant to be short-lived. They are meant to be ornamental plants in small pots, bloomed once, or twice and passed on.

However they were still growing new shoots which means they either need a bigger pot or the shoots need to be replanted. Based on these reasoning, I repotted one plant, and cut a shoot from the other to plant. I do not have high hopes. But, it will be interesting to see how both the new shoot and the old plant turned out. Will the new shoot grow to an adult plant? Will the re-potted plant grow into a bigger plant and bloom again? We shall see what happens from here.

They were still thriving and growing new shoots.

One plant started shedding leaves while the other was looking a bit tired.

I cut a couple of shoots and replanted them and I also re-potted the other plant to see if I can revive it.

Life's Little Lessons

Life is transient. We are born, live a number of years, and we die. In between we learn how to cope with Life. There is a vast well of knowledge to acquire, and the sooner we acquaint ourselves with this knowledge on, and about Life, the easier our lives would be. There is much to learn. Every day we learn something new. And we go on learning until the day we retire – six feet under.

One of the things that we all learned is that Life can be unpredictable. Quite often, Life does not happen the way we hope it would, or the way we want it to. We learn that sometimes… Life makes little sense.

Here are some Life lessons to bear in mind…

No matter what happens, how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow.

Those who are honest with themselves without considering the consequences, go far in life.

Whenever you decide something with an open heart, you usually make the right decision.

It takes years to build up trust, and it only takes suspicion, not proof to destroy it.

You can do something in an instant that will give you a heartache for life.

A rich person is not one who has the most, but is one who needs the least.

It is not what happens to us that's important. It's what we do about it.

The world is like a mirror. If you face it smiling it smiles right back.

Even when you have pains, you don't have to be one.

However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

Opinions don’t define your reality.

Positive thoughts create positive things.

Even sunshine burns if you get too much.

To ignore the facts does not change the facts.

You can be important to someone but not all the time.

Making a "living" is not the same thing as making a "life".

No matter how thin you slice it, there are always two sides.

It’s those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular.

The best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person.

Accept your defeats with your head up and your eyes open, with the grace of an adult, not the grief of a child.

The Canal

This canal runs along my walk route. It is home to fishes, tortoises, turtles and a few monitor lizards. Occasionally otters showed up splashing in the water. Herons stand patiently on the edge of the canal waiting for fishes to come close. Sometimes, egrets could be seen pecking into the water. I have spotted kingfishers on occasions. Somedays, teenagers and men were seen fishing. So, there is plenty of life going on in, and out of the canal. The canal, with all the beautiful flowers and plants along the walk path adds up to a beautiful and interesting walk route.

I saw three monitor lizards on that day. One of them had a big fish in its mouth.

Attitudes

Life's Little Lessons

There is much to learn in life – especially about Life itself. We learn slowly, and sometimes painfully, through our experiences and mistakes.

Coleus Scutellarioides

Coleus scutellarioides, commonly known as coleus, is a species of flowering plant in the family Lamiaceae (the mint or deadnettle family), native to Southeast Asia through to Australia. It is a bushy, woody-based evergreen perennial, widely grown for the highly decorative variegated leaves found in cultivated varieties. Another common name is painted nettle, reflecting its relationship to deadnettles (Lamiumspecies), which are in the same family. - Wikipedia

Coleus scutellarioides is a short-lived plant, cultivated worldwide. The inflorescence is borne on the end of a stem and, like the leaves, is very variable in size. The leaves are variegated, and may include one or more shades of green, white, cream, yellow, pink, red, maroon and dark purple. Patterns of the leaves may vary from symmetrical to irregular; and in shape, from broad to narrow and from small-toothed to wavy margins.
