“This year’s floral display brings forth the romantic charm of the region of Puglia in idyllic southern Italy, a trending wedding destination famed for its quaint whitewashed hill towns with iconic trulli, or traditional limestone houses with conical roofs that are recognised on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Amidst a landscape of picturesque trulli and beautiful roses, love is in the air!”
The Trulli of Alboerobello
The quaint town of Alberobello is situated in central Puglia, and is well known for its over 1,500 iconic conical roofed stone huts known as trulli, scattered along a maze of narrow streets.
The name “trullo” comes from the Greek word tholos, meaning “dome”. On top of the trullo’s cone-shaped roof is a decorative handmade, sandstone pinnacle which represents the trademark of the stonemason who built that particular trullo. There are also white symbols of varying designs (including hearts!) painted on the roof to bring good luck to the inhabitants. This well-preserved site has been given UNESCO World Heritage status.
PumoThe most famous decorative item found all over Puglia is the pumo. The pumo takes the shape of a rose bud surrounded by young leaves and symbolises spring, rebirth and new life.
Originating from Grottaglie and considered a good luck charm of Puglia, it used to stand at the ends of balconies, terraces and columns, and in pairs, beside the beds of newlyweds to wish them happiness, prosperity and fertility. It is tradition for a man to give his future wife a pumo as a promise of his love.
