Bougainvilleas

Bougainvillea is a genus of thorny ornamental climbing plant that is very common in the tropics and sub tropics. They are one of the most common plants seen everywhere here on the island - in parks and gardens as well as along our express-ways and overhead bridges.

Despite its familiarity, this prickly scrambling shrub can still attract attention with its spectacular displays of intensely colourful, papery bracts that surround the flowers. The papery bracts come in a range of colours from pinks, purples, reds, whites and even yellows and oranges! They are often mistaken to be flowers. Actually, the flower in the center of the bracts is small and quite insignificant.

The colourful bracts serve to attract pollinators and help protect the flower buds during development. Bougainvillea blooms all year round. Its drought tolerance makes it ideal for warm climates. They can be pruned into a standard, but are also grown along fence lines, on walls, in containers and hanging baskets, and as a hedge.
